Dated page record · for litigation support, investigators, and compliance teams

A record of exactly what a public page said, and when.

Web pages change without notice. A dated page record keeps the exact bytes up to ten public pages of one site served at a moment in time, with a fingerprint for each page and a signed receipt that anyone can re-check later, without taking our word for it.

What you get

  1. The exact bytes of up to ten public pages from one website, one file per page, exactly as the server returned them.
  2. The capture time of each page, in UTC.
  3. A SHA-256 fingerprint for every page, along with its address, HTTP status, content type, and size.
  4. A signed receipt that binds every file in the record. Anyone can re-check the signature with the public keys published on codemani.com.
  5. RECORD.txt, a plain-language summary of the pages, the limits of the record, and step-by-step instructions for checking it.

How it differs from a screenshot

A screenshot is a picture of a page. It is easy to crop or edit, and it is hard to show later that it was not changed. A dated page record keeps the page itself: the bytes the server sent.

Each page file has a SHA-256 fingerprint. If a single byte changes, the fingerprint no longer matches. The fingerprints are listed in a receipt signed with a CodeMani key, and the public half of that key is published on this site. Anyone holding the record can recompute the fingerprints and check the signature, today or later. You do not need to trust us beyond the published key.

Limits

  • The record contains the bytes the server returned to CodeMani. It is not a rendered image, and it does not include content that a browser adds later by running JavaScript.
  • Public pages only. We do not log in, get past paywalls, or capture anything that needs a password.
  • We follow each site’s robots.txt rules. If robots.txt excludes a page you asked for, we stop and tell you in writing instead of delivering a partial record.
  • CodeMani does not give legal advice and does not decide whether a record can be used as evidence. Whether and how to use it is for you and your counsel.

Checking a record

Recompute the SHA-256 of each page file and compare it with RECORD.txt. Then run verify_receipt.py on the signed receipt, using the published public keys. The verifier is a short Python script you can read before you run it.
